Happy Easter!

I need to do a reverse image source and find out where these vintage Easter cards are from! I want them for next year! For now I will enjoy them here!
I had a wonderful Easter! Drewpy came home after three weeks! For a couple that will start a company together just so we can spend more time together during the day... Three weeks was an eternity!

Snatched Drew up from the airport, Easter brunch, caught Drew up on Walking Dead, a nice walk in perfect Spring weather, Easter Dinner and more Walking Dead! Does it get more Easter than that?

I don't think so!

Tudor...

Drew is still in Texas... This post should just be that sentence... What else matters? Just kidding, but it seriously shines a light on a) how anti-social I am... Or b) how much time Drew and I spend together... Probably c) all of the above! Drew called me to do some research on trim for him! Gladly! His parents home is a tudor style home... We like to keep the trim style consistent with the house. I think the keeps the integrity of the house and keeps it from looking dated or trendy... It's original!
(via)
There are many styles of tudor... I'm not going to focus on the exterior... More on the interiors. Just so we are all on the same page these two houses above and below are Tudors... Usually easily identified by the half timber framing, steep pitched roofs, stucco exteriors, smaller framed leaded windows, chimney with a decorative cap.
(via)
Now for the interiors... If you want to see some incredible trim... Look into tudor homes... They are incredible!

(via)

Is your mind blown? Look at all of that detail!

(via)

I'm crazy about this built in stained buffet, that integrates the leaded windows on the interiors... The paneling into the board and batten... Perfection!

(via)

Leaded diamond patterned windows...

(via)

Oh this ceiling.... Stunning!

Tudor homes often have stained timber ceilings... Beautiful...

(via)

The window trim is simple but elegant... Mitered top and sides with a profiled stool/sill and a small, fluted and tapered apron...

More timbers... But look at those built ins over windows! Yes please!

Professional Paint Prep...

Alrighty... Paint Prep... Everyone's done it... Everyone's finished painting and been bugged that after all that work you can still see all the nail holes, joints etc. one of my favorite things about Drew is his curiosity. When he is on a job site he has never been one to go in with his head down, do his job and get out. He wants to observe and learn how every professional does their trade. Along the way we have learned some pretty great tricks to the trade. Today we will share how the professional painters get their look. Whether you use these steps yourself, or you know what to look for when you hire a painter, this is for you...

Step 1: Set the nail...

I used to hate this step until Drew brought home this spring loaded nail set from Benjamin Moore (the link goes to Woodcraft)... Using the nail set and hammer is so for the 'Harry Homeowner'... All you do is put one end on the nail, pull the back of the nail set and let go... Awesome! I even have a video on my VineApp...

Step 2: Scrape over the nail hole...

Then scrape over every nail hole to with your putty knife like the one in the lower right corner. This knocks down the blow out from the nail gun, so it's all flat.

Step 3: Putty holes...

Grab a ball of putty, we like Crawford's Putty... Squish it into the nail hole... I like to squish it around to really get it in there.

Step 4: Scrape putty

Then with your thumb still depressing the putty in the hole. Shove the putty knife under the thumb across the hole. Making sure the putty is flush with the sides of the hole.

Ugh... This picture is so blurry. It's hard because all of this work was done under a halogen light... But you can see one nail hole filled, one not...

Step 5:Then you prime...

You prime before the next step because no matter how hard you clean there will still be construction dust... And sometimes the caulk etc won't stick to new material. The primer gives it a place to stick to. This will help with the caulk cracking out and expose all of the nail holes you might have missed. Then exposes the cracks or lines to spackle.

Step 6: Caulk...

This no drip caulk gun was the best I have used. Unfortunately Drew can't remember where he bought it... We'll work on that. I like a caulk gun like this that has a hole for cutting off the tip of the caulk in the handle. Stick the tip in and squeeze the handle, then plunge in the metal skewer to help the caulk move out the end.

To caulk you need:

A sponge

Bucket of water

And my new favorite thing... This Hyde Caulk-Rite tool... Saved my fingers!

Step 7: Caulk

Step 8: Remove excess caulk

Step 9: Wipe down line with damp sponge

Step 10: Spackle

We use Bondo's Glazing and Spot Putty. It sands super smooth and takes paint equal to primer so you don't need to reprime. With a thin putty knife apply a THIN coat of spackle over every joint and hole you can see. If you can see it now you'll see it when it's painted.

Step 11: Sand spackle (we use a sanding sponge from Home Depot)

Step 12: First coat of paint

Step 13: Apply spackle to any joint or hole you can still see

Step 14: Sand

Step 15: Second coat of paint

Step 16: Touch ups... There are ALWAYS touch ups!

It's exhausting... But in the end... It's worth it!

The End... If you want to skip the steps yourself... And live in Utah... Gives us a call!

Rainbow Yarn Scavenger Hunt...

I love holidays! My mom loved holidays... Is it nature? Nurture? Who knows... All I know is I love them and I'm not going to wait around to have kids before I celebrate! I have even stooped so low as to make Drew go on a treasure hunt for his Eater basket... This year I got to nanny the day before St. Patrick's Day... What was I to do? Well I was inspired by Oh Happy Days Rainbow Yarn Trail... I mixed it up a bit and made a scavenger hunt...
I bought a pack of these Lion Brand bonbons from Joanne's. I bought two but only needed one. Each mini skein is 38 yards...

I tied the ends of all the colors together and left the skein in the bag. I tied the ends around something and would just hold the bag semi closed so so the skein couldn't come out and the would just unravel as I went. Perfect.

These Lion Brand bonbons had just a cute little pop of metallic in them...
What I love about Joanne's is that before the holiday they have their holiday stuff on Sale. I picked up all of the St. Patrick's Day stuff for 70% off. Score! I drew pictures of objects that they were supposed to find, that would lead to another clue, then follow more of the rainbow to the next set of things to find. It's like a mix of a scavenger/treasure hunt! The kids loved finding the leprechaun gold.... I still like the ones we made last year... They managed to disappear throughout the year...

And they're off....

The sun! It is nice to see the sun again! The followed the rainbow and clues to the first treasure!

I made some felted toadstools! I think they are darling! They needed to find enough leperchaun gold to out in the treasure chest to get the real treasure at the end! The treasure being squinkies.... Have you seen those things? They would have been right up my alley as a kid! Teeny tiny objects? Yes please!

More rainbow... More clues... More objects to find...

A felted leperchaun... I had fun making the first two felted leprechauns.... The last two have some funny limbs, because I was over it! Ha!

More rainbow! More Sun! They were loving it!

Last leperchaun and clue.... The squinkie treasures were hidden in the teepee!

Such a fun and easy activity! Hope you had a fabulous St. Patrick's Day!
